Mobile home taxes, unclaimed checks cleared by supervisors

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors addressed several housekeeping items at its meeting on Tuesday. The board approved the abatement of junked mobile home taxes along with the cancellation of unclaimed checks.

“We sent out notices to every mobile home park in the county asking for an accurate list of what is sitting there, what is taxed,” Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop said. “A lot of them are gone, some of the people are deceased, and the relatives are trying to do the right thing, cleaning them up and getting them off the tax roll.”

Four mobile homes were listed ranging from $84 to $825 in taxes.

The board also approved the cancellation of checks issued by the county that have not be picked up or cashed.

“Once a year all of the outstanding checks that are more than a year old, we cancel them,” Bishop said. “Everybody on the list has been sent a letter stating they have a check on hand. If they would like a replacement they can contact the treasurer’s office and they have until Aug. 15 to do so.”

Eleven checks were addressed this year ranging from $5 to $358.

A maintenance agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation was approved to perform routine maintenance in several areas throughout the county. The agreement is for a portion of Highway F27 from Rock Creek west to the (Kellogg Road), Highway F62 from Casey’s in Sully west to Highway T12 and part of South 44th Avenue.

Maintenance may include snow and ice control, leveling of transverse joints, strip sealing, edge sealing, application of granular materials, blading of granular surfaces, shoulder repair and roadside mowing and herbicide applications among other tasks.

The board also approved an agreement with the DOT to make improvements to Interstate 80.

“The project on I-80 is where they want to eliminate the one crossing over the Interstate east of Kellogg,” assistant to the engineer Pamela Olson. “The road will be re-routed. This part of the project has them taking care of right-of-ways on the route.”

The push behind the project is to eventually expand the interstate, Jasper County Engineer Russ Stutt said.
