Fall prep sports practices open on Monday

Monday signals the start of fall sports practices for Iowa high school teams. Newton, Prairie City-Monroe, Colfax-Mingo, Lynnville-Sully and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter opened football, volleyball and cross country practices.

Newton also began practices for girls’ swimming with the NCMP — Newton/Colfax-Mingo/Pella — Aquagirls. Newton High’s boys moved back into Class 4A golf competition in the fall.

Newton High will hold a meeting for parents and fall sports student-athletes at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the high school cafeteria. Head coaches will meet with parents and students.

Newton’s Under Armour Protect This House Kickoff for the 2016-17 year is Aug. 19 at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. with the freshman football scrimmage at 6 p.m.

Introduction of all the NHS teams for the 2016-17 year begins at 6:50 p.m. There will be performances by the NHS cheerleaders and Pacesetters. The NHS Cardinal Regiment will play the fight song followed by the Cardinal Vocal Music performing the National Anthem.

Newton High’s Cardinal football varsity scrimmage begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Cardinal varsity volleyball team opens 2016 competition on Aug. 23 with the Newton High Invitational volleyball tournament. NCMP begins the 2016 season on Aug. 23 at Linn-Mar.

Newton’s cross country teams begin their seasons on Aug. 25 at the Gilbert Invitational in Ames on the Iowa State University cross country cross.

The Cardinal varsity football team will be competing in Class 4A district play for the next two seasons. Newton opens at home Aug. 26 against Ottumwa.

Newton boys’ golf will play a split season with two invitational golf tournaments in the fall and Class 4A district competition. They play in the Sept. 6 Ottumwa Invitational. The 4A boys’ golf state meet is Oct. 7-8. The Cardinals will play Little Hawkeye Conference golf in the spring.

The Little Hawkeye Conference becomes an eight-team conference this year. Indianola joined the LHC along with Newton, Dallas Center-Grimes, Grinnell, Norwalk, Oskaloosa, Pella and Pella Christian.

Area volleyball: PCM opens Aug. 23 at Dallas Center-Grimes tournament; Colfax-Mingo opens Aug. 25 in South Iowa Cedar League quadrangular at BGM; Lynnville-Sully opens Aug. 30 at CMB.

Area cross country: Colfax-Mingo opens Aug. 25 at Marshalltown; Lynnville-Sully opens Aug. 30 at Williamsburg; CMB, PCM open Aug. 25 in the Gilbert Invitational at Ames.

Area football: Aug. 26 schedule — Colfax-Mingo at Lynnville-Sully; Nevada at CMB; Pella Christian at PCM.
