Elmer Lloyd Wessel, 93, the son of Elmer Gail and Elpha Fern (Harris) Wessel, was born April 13, 1923, near Laurel. On June 20, 1943, Lloyd was united in marriage with Marjorie Nadine Jordan in Lancaster, Mo. Lloyd served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy, as Motor Machinist Second Class. A longtime resident of Jasper County, he was employed for more than 37 years as the welder/machinist for VanDusseldorp Sand & Gravel in Colfax, retiring in 1988. Lloyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton and active there for many years. He had an extensive collection of WWII memorabilia and artifacts and enjoyed sharing his experiences and knowledge with groups including schools, Boy Scouts and nursing homes. He was active in the local Experimental Aircraft Association.

Lloyd died Friday, July 22, 2016, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie Nov. 1, 2015; and his sisters Virginia Kling of Texas and Dorothy Anspach of Newton.

Those left to honor Lloyd’s memory include his son, Dr. David (Margie) Wessel of Washington, D.C.; his daughters, Lynda Wessel of West Des Moines and Tari (Malcolm) Rowland of Rockford, Ill.; his seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sisters Fay White of Newton and Doris Wessel of Carolton, Mo.

A time of visitation and remembrance will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26 at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated in Lloyd’s name to Immanuel Baptist Church.
