1. Rock the Library

6 to 8 p.m. Friday
Newton Public Library

Folk & Roll duo, The High Crest, will perform. This musical act uses a blend of dueling guitars, powerful harmonies and djembe hand drums.

The concert will be held outdoors on the library lawn and is family-friendly. Blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics are encouraged. For more information, call 641-792-4108.

2. Quarry Springs Grand Opening

9 a.m. Saturday
Quarry Springs Park in Colfax

The grand opening of Quarry Springs Park, scheduled for Saturday, will give visitors a full experience of what the newly opened park currently has wto offer and a vision for its future. Saturday is filled with several fun, and free, activities including a kids fishing derby from 9 to 11 a.m., a free-will lunch serving hamburgers, chips and drinks and a nature hike through the park’s trails.

3. Free Movie ‘The Sandlot’

10 a.m. Saturday
Capitol II Theatre

The Newton YMCA and United Way of Jasper County presents its first free movie event of the summer with “The Sandlot.”

These movies are free to the public. You may pick up your tickets at the Newton YMCA, United Way of Jasper County or Capitol II Theatre. For more information call 641-792-4006.

The theater will have a $3 specil for a 16 ounce pop and 32 ounce popcorn.

4. Evening at the Arboretum

6 to 9 p.m. Saturday
Newton Arboretum

This is a free event open to the public. Come listen to Duo SeVer as they perform jazz and international covers starting at 7 p.m.This concert will be held outdoors, so bring lawn chairs and blankets. Prime Country BBQ & Catering will park their concession trailer in the parking lot and will be selling food starting at 6 p.m. Also Buzzed Bee Meadery, Inc. will be on site with free wine sample and bottles of wine available for sale.

5. Diva and the Deacons

2 to 4 p.m. Sunday
Maytag Bowl

Super-dynamic Diva Tina Haase Findley and the Deacons will electrify Newtonites and visitors, with the perfect multi-faceted-blue-musical-flavor feast for a Sunday in the beautiful Maytag Park. The South Skunk Blues Society is partnering with Newton Parks and Rec to sponsor this show, and the Jasper County Thrivent Chapter will be matching donations to Jasper County area food pantries up to $1,294. There is no cover, but cash donations to the food pantries are definitely encouraged.
