Reading programs continue at the Newton library

Summer Reading for Adults

The Newton Public Library’s Summer Reading program has been a longtime favorite for local children, but did you know adults can get in on the fun too? Adult readers are invited to check out any three books or audiobooks through Aug. 26 to earn a free ticket to the movie of their choice at the Capitol II Theatre.

The Checkout Challenge

Explore all the library has to offer with the Checkout Challenge. This adult Summer Reading program works like a scavenger hunt; pick up a punch card bookmark at the library and complete six of the tasks listed on the bookmark. Ask a staff member to punch your bookmark every time you complete a task, then turn in your completed bookmark by Aug. 26 for a chance to win a Kindle tablet and other prizes.

Meet a Raptor

Meet an owl, hawk and falcon. Laura Zaugg from SOAR (Saving Our Avian Resources) will provide a presentation on raptor rehabilitation at 4 p.m. July 22. This program will be held outdoors on the library lawn and attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. All ages welcome, no registration required.

Concert on the Lawn

Iowa “Folk & Roll” duo, The High Crest, will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. July 22. This musical act is a blend of dueling guitars, powerful harmonies, and groovy djembe hand drums. The High Crest has performed at the Des Moines Arts Festival, Rocket Suzie Music Festival and nationally at Sunfest (OR). The concert will be held outdoors on the library lawn and is family-friendly. Blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics are encouraged.

Smartphones for Beginners

Join our Public Services Librarian at 11 a.m. July 25, for an introduction to smartphone use. This small class is recommended for beginners and no experience is necessary. Attendees should bring their phones and charging cords. Registration is required and spaces are limited. Please call 641-792-4108 to register.

Dan Wardell's
Reading Road Trip

Join Iowa Public Television’s Dan Wardell on his Reading Road Trip. On July 28 children of all ages are invited to listen to Dan’s fantastic storytelling at either 9:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Wear your super hero cape just like Dan and be sure to bring your camera. This program will be held outdoors on the library lawn, and lawn chairs or blankets are encouraged. No registration required.

Summer Reading Pool Party

Turn in your youth Summer Reading book log by July 29 to receive your ticket for the pool party that evening at Maytag Park. This party is a reward for children who have finished the summer reading program, and attendees must have a ticket to enter. Dominos pizza will be served at 6:30 p.m. and swimming runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
