J-Hawks beat Cardinals

URBANDALE — Newton High’s Cardinal softball team pushed Class 5A eighth-ranked Urbandale right to the end of Wednesday’s non-conference game. The Class 4A 15th-ranked Cardinals concluded their regular season with a 5-4 loss to the J-Hawks.

Newton scored a run in the first inning. Urbandale countered with two runs in its half of the frame.

The Cardinals pushed two runs across in the third to take a 3-2 lead over the J-Hawks. Urbandale regained the lead with two runs in the fourth and added a run in the fifth.

Anna Coyle was the losing pitcher for Newton as she allowed six hits. Newton had seven hits led by Sydney Jenkins and Peyton Maher with two each.

No other game information was available at presstime.

Newton (21-10) awaits its semifinal opponent in Class 4A Region 2 play. Thirteenth-ranked Boone hosts Webster City at 7 p.m. Thursday to open Region 2 action. The winner plays the Cardinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at Newton’s Berg Middle School field.

In Thursday’s other regional opener, Waterloo East is at Independence. The winner plays at No. 5 Waverly-Shell Rock at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The 4A Region 2 championship game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the highest remaining seeded team’s field.
