Early lead holds for Colfax-Mingo baseball

WEST DES MOINES — Colfax-Mingo freshman Zarek Hill helped himself at the plate when he singled, stole second, took third on flyout and scored on a passed ball in the second inning of the Tigerhawks’ baseball game with Iowa Christian Academy.

The early lead proved to be beneficial for Hill as he did the rest on the mound during non-conference action Tuesday.

Hill struck out seven and allowed two earned runs, and the Tigerhawks’ early 3-0 lead held up in a 7-4 victory.

Colfax-Mingo, which won five games last year, is now 13-13 on the season.

Hill put the Tigerhawks up 1-0 in the first inning. Junior Adam Teed made it 2-0 when he walked, stole second, moved to third on a single by junior Jimmy Camp and then scored on a flyout by sophomore Alex Lewis.

In third inning, sophomore Misha Seebeck singled, took second base after an error and then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Jarod Nichols.

Iowa Christian Academy made things interesting later in the day, but the Tigerhawks held on to win. Colfax-Mingo led 5-3 after four innings and plated two runs in the sixth to seal the victory.

Camp finished with two hits, a run and an RBI, while Seebeck was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Jacob Buehrer’s lone hit was a double. Hill allowed four hits on the mound.

The Tigerhawks’ busy week continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a trip to Colo-NESCO. That game will be played in Zearing.

Colfax-Mingo plays at 7 p.m. Thursday at Central Decatur and then at 7 p.m. Friday at Woodward-Granger.
