Rain shortens local sports slate

Rain needed in the Newton area came at an inopportune time for area high school softball and baseball teams Thursday. Only one of the eight scheduled games were played.

Colfax-Mingo’s baseball team played one of a scheduled doubleheader with visiting Moravia. The Tigerhawk boys lost a slugfest with the Mohawks, 12-9.

The Tigerhawks led 4-1 after one inning, and the fireworks continued throughout the contest. The Mohawks forged a 9-9 tie heading into the seventh inning.

Moravia scored three runs in the top of the seventh then held Colfax-Mingo scoreless in the bottom of the inning. No details on the game were available at presstime.

Newton High’s baseball team was to have played at home against Des Moines North Thursday. Cardinal head coach Dustin Brisel said they were working on trying to reschedule the non-conference game with the Polar Bears.

The Cardinal baseball team wraps up its Little Hawkeye Conference action Friday. It plays at doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. against host Norwalk.

Newton High’s softball team was at Urbandale, and its games were washed out. The Cardinal varsity will play at Urbandale at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Also on Thursday, Colfax-Mingo’s softball team was to have played a doubleheader at home against Moravia but the rain postponed action. Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s softball and baseball teams’ Heart of Iowa Conference game at Saydel were washed out.

CMB’s baseball team is at Woodward-Granger and the Raider softball team hosts Ogden Friday night. Prairie City-Monroe’s baseball and softball squads are at Gilbert Friday.

Colfax-Mingo softball is at Colo-NESCO and the Tigerhawk baseball team hosts Melcher-Dallas. Lynnville-Sully softball is at a tournament in Carlisle Friday.
