Newton Fourth of July activities

The Newton Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Newton Fourth of July parade followed by family activities and food vendors Monday downtown Newton.

Parade line-up — 7 a.m. begin at Newton DMACC. General parade entries should enter North Second Avenue West from West Eighth Street North. You'll be lined up first-come-first-served. Participants are asked to read all of the parade safety guidelines on the parade registration form.

City and county services, military, veterans, high school band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other politicians and dignitaries will line up on West Fourth Street North entering from North Fourth Avenue West. Parade officials will be there to help line up in the proper order.

Fourth of July Parade – 9:30 a.m., downtown Newton The "Salute to Presidents" parade will once again begin at Newton DMACC, head east down First Avenue, turn north at East Fourth Street North and west on North Second Avenue back to DMACC. The 2016 Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal is Junior Banks.

Food and Festivities — 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Jasper County Courthouse square. D.J. Nick Hoskins will play music, a bags tournament, a beer garden for adults, and bounce house, joust and obstacle inflatables for children. The Sherman Sunbeams 4-H Club will provide children carnival games.

Food vendors include VFW Ladies Auxiliary, J & J Ice Shack and Newton Noon Kiwanis.

Merchandise vendors or activity providers are Newton Community School’s Booster Club, Sherman Sunbeams 4-H Club and Hometown Rewards.

Downtown food and fun will begin after the parade and conclude around 2 p.m.

Following the celebration downtown, The City of Newton Parks and Grounds department and Newton Parks Board will host additional activities, entertainment and fireworks at Agnes Patterson Park.

Sand Volleyball Tournament — 1 p.m. , Agnes Patterson Park. Registration forms for the Fourth of July Sand Volleyball Tournament must be turned in by Thursday to the parks office, 3000 N. Fourth Ave. E. in Newton. The cost is $25 per team. This event is sponsored by Van Maanen Electric.

Parking Lots Open — 6 p.m., Agnes Patterson Park.

Kid Zone, Bounce Houses, Games and Food Vendors — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Agnes Patterson Park. Sponsored by Trinity Structural Towers.

Slipstream — 7 to 9 p.m., Agnes Patterson Park. The band will perform for free, sponsored by U.S. Bank.

Fireworks Show — Dusk (about 9:30 p.m.), Agnes Patterson Park. Sponsored by Hy-Vee.

Park staff will be updating the Newton Parks and Recreation Facebook page throughout the day with any important event related announcements such as weather cancellations, and parking updates.
