Dewey Earl “Pete” West, Jr., the son of Dewey Earl West, Sr. and Virginia Claudia Tankersley, was born Feb. 25, 1951, in Albia. Pete graduated from Collins High School with the class of 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1975 until 1978. Pete worked for the Maytag Company in Newton. He retired in 2000, as a repairman on the Red Carpet Line after 30 years with the company. Pete is a member of the UAW Retirees Union Local #997. On June 10, 2002, Pete was united in marriage with Debra Coe in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Pete died Monday, June 27, 2016, at his home in Newton, following a long courageous battle against cancer. He was 65 years old.

Those left to honor Pete’s memory include his wife, Deb of Newton; his son, Ronald A. West of West Des Moines; his daughter, Kristy Lynn West of Newton; his nephews, Shawn Stackhouse and David Buttz, Lenny Buttz, Brett Buttz and Jerard Buttz; his sister, Jane Stackhouse of Marshalltown and Bill West of Marshalltown; his uncle, Gerald Davis of Oklahoma; his aunts, Mary Ann Harvel of Fort Smith, Ark., and Betty Davis of Oklahoma; his stepsons, Michael Kiyoshk and Christopher Kiyoshk; his step-daughter, Kristen (Kyler) Aebischer; his granddaughter, Brianna Aebischer; and grandson of the heart, Evin Barton.

A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 1 at the Newton Union Cemetery, Veteran’s Section. Memorials may be designated to the Deb West Family Memorial Fund and may be left at the funeral home.
