Hawk baseball makes quick work of winless Montezuma

SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully baseball team didn’t need too long to put away the winless Montezuma Braves on Wednesday during South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Hawks plated nine runs in the first inning and cruised to an 11-1, five-inning home victory.

“The pitching staff is really coming together to give us some solid innings,” L-S coach Bob Scandridge said. “As long as the defense plays well behind them, we are a pretty tough team.”

Sophomores Elijah Collins and Josh Dunsbergen combined to allow three hits over five innings.

Collins earned the win after tossing three innings of no-hit ball. He struck out four and walked two. Dunsbergen allowed three hits and one earned run in his two innings. He also struck out four.

“Elijah threw exceptionally well, throwing a no-hitter for three innings,” Scandridge said. “(Collins) had some speed and good movement on his fastball, and that gave the Montezuma hitters some fits.”

The Hawks walked six times and had five hits at the plate. Junior Tyler Van Zante and senior Ross Van Wyk both had two hits, while junior Caden Dunsbergen scored three runs. Collins had one walk, two steals and two runs.

Senior Kobe Fisk had one hit, one run and one RBI, and Van Wyk had two RBIs.

Lynnville-Sully (13-5 overall, 12-1 in the SICL) now has four straight wins and has won six of its last seven games. In the past 10 games, the only two losses have come against Class 2A West Marshall and 2A Pella Christian.

Montezuma dropped to 0-14 overall and 0-11 in the SICL.
