City captures geese, birds sent to meat locker

CEDAR RAPIDS — City workers in Cedar Rapids have rounded up hundreds of geese, with some headed for distant waterways and others destined for a meat processor. Workers Monday captured the geese around ponds, lakes and the Cedar River within Cedar Rapids. City parks superintendent Daniel Gibbins says there are too many of the birds, and roundups take place every year.

The difference is that this year, 161 adult geese were taken to a meat locker, where they will be processed and the meat given to needy families.

Another 285 young geese were banded and will be taken outside the area. Officials will then study whether banded birds returned to Cedar Rapids.

Gibbins says the city will study the results before deciding what to do next year.
