SULLY — Lynnville-Sully senior Noah Engle tripled and scored on an error in the third inning to tie Colfax-Mingo during a South Iowa Cedar League home game Monday.

Engle reached base again in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored on another Tigerhawk error and the walk-off 4-3 victory helped the Hawks stay on top of the SICL.

The come-from-behind triumph moves Lynnville-Sully’s conference record to 11-1. The Tigerhawks dropped to 7-6 inside the SICL. The Hawks have now won five of their last six games.

“We keep finding ways to be in ball games with a chance to win,” L-S coach Bob Scandridge said. “It seems every night someone else gets it going for us. Tonight, that was Noah Engle.”

Colfax-Mingo led 1-0 after one inning. Senior Gabe Simpson reached on an error, stole second and then scored on junior Adam Teed’s RBI single.

Engle laced a triple to right field in the third inning and then scored when the throw to third base got by eighth-grader Trystin Ross.

Neither team scored again until the sixth. Both teams scored twice to make it 3-all.

Engle singled in the bottom of the seventh, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caden Dunsbergen. Elijah Collins hit a tapper back to freshman pitcher Zarek Hill, and the ball got past first baseman Misha Seebeck. That allowed Engle to score the game-winning run.

Lynnville-Sully (12-5) swept two competitive games against Colfax-Mingo (10-8) this season. The Hawks opened the season with a 6-4 win over the Tigerhawks in Colfax on May 23.

The Hawks had 10 hits in the win. Engle finished with two hits and two runs. Carson Dunsbergen also had two hits, while Kyle Van Dyke had one hit and one RBI and Dylan Roozeboom and Kobe Fisk each had one hit and one run.

Junior Tyler Van Zante improved to 5-0 on the season, defeating the Tigerhawks for the second time. He struck out nine, walked three and allowed two earned runs on four hits in Monday’s win.

“Tyler had a gutsy performance,” Scandridge said. “He is rounding into form on the mound, getting stronger with each start.”

Hill went the distance on the mound for the Tigerhawks. He took the loss, but only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

Teed finished with two hits and an RBI at the plate, while Wyatt Owens and Seebeck each went 1-for-2.

Colfax-Mingo plays at 6 p.m. at HLV on Wednesday, while Lynnville-Sully hosts Montezuma at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
