Newton trio shoots at sporting clays championship

ACKLEY — Dawson Cobler, Connor McAdoo and Logan Zaabel combined for 16th place for Newton Trap Team in the senior division of Saturday’s Iowa high school State Sporting Clays Championship.

The Newton trio hit 326 out of 450 targets.

There were 25 squads competing in the senior division.

McAdoo was Newton’s top individual competitor on the day. He had a score of 119 out of 150 targets, finishing 27th out of 81 male varsity shooters.

Cobler hit 104 and Zaabel hit 103 targets to take 61st and 63rd, respectively.

“There are several teams in Iowa which shoot a lot of sporting clays, so, of course, they’re really good at it,” Newton head coach Paul Klein said. “We don’t get a chance to shoot as much as these teams, but I’m really pleased with our results.

“Our shooters posted good scores for us. We finished in about the middle of the field, which is what I was expecting.”

Newton Trap Team wraps up its 2016 season next weekend at the State Skeet Championships in Waukee.
