State insect zoo at the Newton Public Library Monday

Dog-Eared Art Contest

Give your old and damaged books new life as literary art. Create a unique work of art using books for a chance to win an art inspired prize basket. Entries will be placed on display in the library lobby July 1-15. All entries are due no later than July 1 and entrants should be aged 13 and older. Iowa State Insect Zoo

The Iowa State Entomology Department is bringing their insect zoo to the library. Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and noon on Monday to view these amazing insects and learn about their lives. This program is an open house format, and no registration is required.

Adult Coloring:
Sidewalk Chalk Edition

Our monthly adult coloring program is back 6 p.m. Monday — with a summer twist. Learn how to make your own sidewalk paint and create a mini masterpiece on the library sidewalk using mandala stencils, glitter and more. All materials are provided, no registration required. Artists of all ages are welcome to this family-friendly program.

Garden Clean-Out Day

We’re installing a new garden and need your help. Volunteers are needed from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday to weed and clean the front flowerbed. All garden helpers will be offered a daylily from our landscaping. Please bring sunscreen, gloves and anything you may need to stay cool and comfortable. We will provide water and Gatorade. Flip Flop Fun for Teens

Join us at 2 p.m. Tuesday to decorate a pair of flip flops. Attendees should bring a new pair of flip flops, and we’ll provide everything you need to customize them. Registration is required, ages 13-18. Please call 641-792-4108 to register.

Pint Size Polka

Mike Schneider from Milwaukee, Wis. will entertain us with his accordion polka music and educational songs at 10:30 a.m. June 27. Call 641-792-4108 to register for this program. Recommended for ages 2-10.

Butterfly Garden Installation

We’re planting a new butterfly garden on the library lawn. Katie Cantu from the Jasper County Conservation Department will demonstrate how to start a butterfly garden and help us install our own at the library at 9 a.m. June 28. Join us to help with the planting, or just come to watch and learn.

‘Read on the Road’ Summer Photo Contest

Where will your Newton Public Library card go this summer? Access digital books, databases and music worldwide with your library card. Photograph your library card wherever you may roam, then post to the Newton Public Library Facebook or Instagram page, with the tag #NPLReads. Three lucky photographers will win a family fun pack to the Capitol II Theatre. Contest ends Aug. 20.
