Newton Trap Team competes at state meet

The Newton Trap Team finished out its 2016 trap shoot season June 11 and 12 at the Iowa State Trap Championships in Cedar Falls. The Cardinal varsity squads finished 82nd and 96th out of 152 squads.

Newton’s varsity team of Connor McAdoo, Dawson Cobler, Clay Trotter, Evan Cook and Ross Hull combined for a score of 867 out of a possible 1,000 for 82nd. Combining for a 848 score for 96th were Matt Bleakney, Logan Zaabel, Nathan Tremel, Colton Kingery and Brian Bleakney.

Allison Winchell hit 137 targets out of 200 to finish 170th in a field of 205 varsity female shooters.

McAdoo posted Newton’s highest individual male varsity score, 188 of 200, to place 102nd out of 835 male shooters.

McAdoo and Trotter recorded firsts for themselves at the state meet. Each one hit 25 straight targets in competition for the first time.

“We always seem to shoot well at the State Trap Championships, and this year was no exception,” Newton Trap Team head coach Paul Klein said. “With more than 1,600 high school shooters competing in the event, there is some really tough competition. It’s tough to see your team members shoot really good scores and then realize how far below the leaders they are.”

Klein said McAdoo was 11 targest behind the first-place position, and still ended up 102nd overall. He said it showed how tough the competition is at state.

“I’m really pleased with our performance,” Klein said. “There were multiple tied scores and awards are given to the top six in each division.”

Newton was one member short of having a full squad in the junior vanity division.

Four Cardinal shooters did compete for individual awards in the junior varsity event.

Joshua Adkison posted Newton’s highest score in the male junior varsity class, shooting a 158 out of 200 to finish 265th out of 444 competitors.

Brooke Gifford shot a 157 out of 200 to finish 31st out of 131 junior varsity female shooters.

Newton competes in the 2016 State Sports Clays Championships Saturday in Ackley.

The Cardinals go to the 2016 State Skeet Championships June 25-26 in Waukee to wrap up the season.
