Mustang baseball loses lead to Gilbert

PRAIRIE CITY — The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team had eight hits and held an early lead against Gilbert on Friday night.

The Tigers though rallied from a two-run deficit to win 8-4 against the Mustangs during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

PCM plated one in the first and three in the second to lead 4-2 after two innings. Gilbert (5-7 overall, 4-1 in HOIC play) took the lead for good with a three-run fourth and tacked on two runs in the sixth to win by four runs.

Senior Tyler Foster and junior Noah Clark had two hits apiece at the plate. Senior Clay Cooper had one hit, one walk, one run and one RBI.

Freshman Brayton Van Dyke was impressive at the plate and on the mound. Van Dyke finished with two walks, one run and a stole base offensively. He relieved sophomore Noah Henkenius in the fourth and surrendered only one earned run on three hits in the final 3 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked one.

Henkenius started on the mound and lasted 3 1/3 innings. Only two of the six runs he allowed were earned. He allowed seven hits.

Both teams committed four errors. Gilbert finished with 12 hits, led by Steven Lawrence’s four hits and three runs.

PCM (5-8, 4-4) hosts Greene County at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The Mustangs stay home at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they face Colfax-Mingo.
