CMB softball stays unbeaten in HOIC

ROLAND — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter senior Payge Jurgens wasn’t getting many pitches to hit early in the season.

That has changed the last few games, and Jurgens is making the most of her opportunities.

Jurgens blasted two home runs and doubled in another at-bat, and that production helped the CMB softball team stay unbeaten in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The Class 3A No. 10 Raiders blasted Roland-Story 11-2 on the road Wednesday to improve their conference mark to 6-0.

The two home runs for Jurgens gives her three on the season and moves her into a tie for eighth in Class 3A.

Jurgens also walked twice and scored four runs on the night. That gives her 13 walks on the season, which is tied for second in 3A.

Jurgens is now hitting .611 on the season.

Junior Abbey Kahler also had three hits at the dish. She was hit by a pitch, scored twice and drove in two more runs as the Raiders improved to 8-1 on the season.

Freshman Hannah Caple had three RBIs, while eighth-grader Mikayla Houge had two RBIs and junior Mikayla Eslinger had one hit, one run and one RBI.

That offensive production was more than enough for Houge, who improved to 4-0 in the circle after allowing no earned runs on five hits. She fanned eight, walked one and hit one batter in seven innings.

The only two remaining undefeated teams in HOIC play square off at 7 p.m. Friday in Collins as CMB takes on Saydel.

The Raiders also play in the Newton tournament on Saturday.

They open at 8:30 a.m. against South Hardin at Agnes Patterson Park. CMB also plays Des Moines Roosevelt at 10 a.m. and 3A No. 1 Benton at 11:30 a.m.

All three games are on field No. 4.
