• Alcoholics Anonymous will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 223 E. Fourth St. N. in Newton.

• Meal & Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, 889 Highway F36 W. in Newton.

• Jasper County Democratic Central Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Garden Room at Park Centre in Newton. All Democrats are welcome.

• Lemonade in the Shade presents The Bill Riley Talent Search will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl. Talented children will compete in two divisions for a chance to be part of the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Iowa State Fair. Competition is open in the Sprout (2-12) and Senior (13-21) divisions. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants in each division.

• Newton Junk Fest will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday on the corner of North Fourth Avenue West and West Third Street North. Junk Fest will feature vendors from the Midwest bring their antiques, repurposed and vintage goods to Newton.

• Penny Bingo will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Jasper County Senior Citizens Center, 702 E. Third St. S. in Newton.

• Concert on the Prairie 2016 will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City. Max Wellman and his jazz trio will be performing at the annual fundraiser for Friends of Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. Catered dinner, art displays, twilight trail walk and fun.

• Thunder Nites will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the downtown square in Newton. Featured performer is Richard Arndt and the Brew.

• Newton Main Street’s Backyard BBQ Competition will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Parking lot on North 2nd Avenue West (next to Walker, Billingsley and Bair Law Office).

• Prairie City Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in Prairie City.

• The Birds and the Bees 8K will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The race will start from Sunset Park. Awards will be given to participants who look most like a gardener, a backyard animal, a flower and to whoever is wearing the brightest clothing. Proceeds go to the Newton Arboretum.

• Iowa Sheep and Wool Festival will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Jasper County fairgrounds in Colfax. Fiber arts, wool products, sheep shows, cooking with lamb & tasting, sheep producer education seminars. www.iowasheepandwoolfestival.com

• NPD Bike Silent Auction will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Newton Police Department, 101 W. Fourth St. in Newton. The Newton Police Department will hold a silent auction of approximately 29 bicycles, City of Newton Parking meters, two scooters, PS3 game console with controllers and headphones, Sony radio, Gyro Copter and portable air tank. Auction property will be on display for viewing from 2 to 4 p.m. June 10 and prior to the Auction on Saturday.

• Third Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Newton Senior High School, 800 E. Fourth St. S. in Newton. Ceremony takes place during Reunion Weekend at the All-Classes Brunch. Buffet will be served starting at 10 a.m. with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m.

• The Newton High Class of 1944 will hold a special 72nd reunion luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Park Centre Garden room.

• Historic Church Walk will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday and will meet at the Newton Public Library.

• NHS Class of 1971 will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at Okoboji Bar & Grill in Newton. Final decisions will be made for the reunion. All class members interested are welcome to come to this final meeting.

• Baxter Alumni Reunion will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at Baxter School Commons in Baxter. No reservations need. Freewill donations.

• Newton Fest will continue Saturday in downtown Newton. Activities will include Newton High School Alumni Weekend, Thunder Nites and other family oriented activities.

• ‘80s Night featuring Ladies of the ‘80s will be from 8 a.m. Saturday to midnight in Downtown Newton. Come ready to rock to Minnesota-based Ladies of the ‘80s as they pay tribute to the biggest names in ‘80s music. Come dressed up in your best ‘80s style for a chance to win prizes.

• Community Church Service & Picnic will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Maytag Bowl. Enjoy a non-denominational worship service for the entire community. Those attending are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy following church services.

• Iowa Sculpture Fest Committee presents Artist Demonstration will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Newton Public Library lawn. Visitors to the Iowa Sculpture Fest Committees Artist demonstrations will have an opportunity to see artist Ron Disdale at work. Disdale who works in limestone, will be exhibiting his sculpture techniques and giving people the chance to see pieces of art take shape before their eyes.
