Newton sweeps past Lynnville-Sully

Newton High’s Cardinals swept a non-conference doubleheader at home Tuesday against Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks.

The Cardinal freshman pitchers Anna Coyle and Peyton Maher had dominating performances in the circle. They were backed up with strong defensive play by the Cardinals and plenty of offensive power.

Coyle threw a one-hit shutout in the opener as the Cardinals won 11-0 in six innings. She issued one walk to the Hawks and struck out five.

Lynnville-Sully’s one hit was a single by junior Brenna Lanser. The Hawks’ freshman Carson Fisk went the distance for the pitching loss, allowing nine his and walking five.

In the second game, Maher gave up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three in her complete-game performance for Newton. The Cardinals won 10-3 on a 13-hit attack.

The Hawks’ starting pitcher for the nightcap was eighth-grader Mallory Loftus, who pitched five innings and had four strikeouts. Fisk pitched one inning in relief.

“These were great team victories for us tonight,” Newton head coach Kristina McNew said. “The girls really hit the ball well.”

Newton improved to 8-4 overall while Lynnville-Sully fell to 6-7. The Cardinals take a 1-1 Little Hawkeye Conference mark into a 7:30 p.m. home conference game Wednesday against Grinnell.

The Hawks travel to Sigourney for a 6 p.m. South Iowa Cedar League game Wednesday. They are 5-1 in SICL action.

Newton took control quickly in the first game Tuesday, scoring five runs in the first inning. With one gone, Karley Leiker reached on a Lynnville-Sully error followed by an RBI double by Maher. Taylor Ryan drew a walk and the Newton runners moved up a base on a passed ball.

Emily Valtman delivered a two-run double to left field. Audrey Lucas had a bloop single to right field and ended up on second on the play. Kari Adams’ two-out infield pop-up dropped in for a single and two runs scored.

Newton added a run in the second. Sydney Jenkins singled and stole second base. She scored when Karley Leiker reached on an error.

The Cardinals pushed across another run in the fifth inning. Ryan doubled and stole third base. Following a one-out walk issued to Audrey Lucas, Ryan swiped home for the run.

Jenkins singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the sixth and advanced to second on an error on the play. Karley Leiker walked and Ryan smashed a two-out RBI single. A second run was plated on the throw in and Ryan was safe at third on the play.

Valtman worked a base-on-balls off Fisk to put two runners on base for Newton. Audrey Lucas’ base hit chased two runs in to end the game by run-rule.

Ryan finished with a single and a double in the game for Newton. Jenkins and Audrey Lucas each and two singles. Maher and Valtman had a double apiece and Adams singled.

The Cardinals scored first in the second game on a double by Karley Leiker and a two-out single by Ryan in the first inning. Lynnville-Sully answered with two runs in the second and one in the third for a 3-1 lead.

In the second inning, Lanser singled and Fisk reached on a Cardinal error. Jelissa Rozendaal had a fielder’s choice and Kristen Van Der Wilt singled to help produce two runs. The Hawks scored in the third when Kasiah Ehresman walked, stole second and third base followed by an infield single by Loftus and a one-out RBI sacrifice fly ball to center field by Lanser.

That was all the scoring for the Hawks. Maher and the Cardinals retired Lynnville-Sully in order the final four innings.

Newton gained the lead on a three-run bottom of the third inning started with a single by Ryan and an RBI double by Valtman. With two gone, Adams walked followed by back-to-back singles from Fran Lucas and Jenkins.

Fran Lucas started a two-out scoring rally in the fifth inning for Newton by drawing a walk. Jenkins singled, Karley Leiker was hit by a pitch and Maher singled in two runs.

Newton plated four more runs in the sixth on four hits and another Hawk error.

Ryan was 3-for-3 with a double and two singles for Newton while Valtman had a double and a triple. Jenkins and Fran Lucas each had two singles. Karley Leiker doubled. Hitting a single each were Maher, Kennedy Leiker and Adams.

Van Der Wilt, Loftus and Lanser each had a base hit for Lynnville-Sully.
