Lester, Heyward lead Cubs to win over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jon Lester pitched eight scoreless innings, Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer and the Chicago Cubs held off the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Monday night.

Lester (7-3) improved to 6-0 in eight career starts against the Phillies while lowering his ERA against them to 1.46. He struck out nine, walked none and allowed four hits.

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler each had three hits for the Cubs, who won their 11th in 13 games while extending their best start since 1900 to a major league-leading 40-16. Chicago moved 10 games in front of second-place Pittsburgh in the NL Central.

Philadelphia scored all its runs in the ninth against Chicago’s bullpen. Freddy Galvis hit a three-run homer and Tommy Joseph had a solo shot before Hector Rondon earned his 11th save.

Adam Morgan (1-5) lost his fifth straight start. Philadelphia has dropped nine of 11 overall.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mark Trumbo and Matt Wieters hit solo homers in the seventh inning to back a sparkling pitching performance by Mike Wright, and Baltimore extended Kansas City’s losing streak to five games.

Manny Machado also homered for the Orioles, who have won five of six — all in come-from-behind fashion.

Wright and Kansas City left-hander Danny Duffy were locked in a scoreless duel until the Royals pushed across an unearned run in the seventh.

Trumbo led off the bottom half with his 19th home run, and Wieters connected with one out to chase Duffy (1-1). Adam Jones capped the uprising with an RBI double.

Machado homered off Kelvin Herrera in the eighth.

Demoted to the minors last week but recalled the following day when reliever Darren O’Day went on the disabled list, Wright (3-3) allowed one run and five hits over seven innings.

Zach Britton earned his 18th save.
