Richard Roy “Dick” Weston, the son of Donald E. and Bertha Hazel (Cox) Weston, was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Newton. He attended the Mingo Community School.

On June 5, 1947, Dick was united in marriage with Margaret Jean Berkley in Lincoln, Neb. He worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad and the Chicago Northwestern Railroads and later for Coast to Coast in Newton. Margaret Jean and Dick wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz., for 18 years. Dick was a pilot, he loved fishing, hunting, camping, traveling extensively and spending time with family where many a pint of homemade ice cream was made. He was a member of the Preston Lodge No, 218 in Prairie City, the Mingo Men’s Club, the Colfax McDonald’s coffee group and the Colfax Sale Barn coffee group.

Dick died Thursday, May 26, 2016, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was 86 years old. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Jean, March 11, 2009; and a sister, Betty Weston in infancy.

Those left to honor Dick‘s memory include his son, Craig (Kris) Weston of Newton; his daughters, Kathy Weston of Fresno, Calif., and Janine Jensen (Rick Williams) of Grimes; his four grandchildren, Kimberly (Dennis) Gunn, Ryan (Tami) Kessler, Kelly (Tom) Bredfield, Katy Weston; and five great grandchildren, Keyshawn Gunn, Marshawn Gunn, Nicholas Kessler, Addison Kessler and Holden Bredfield.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 7 at the Mingo United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 6 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A public Masonic service will begin at 6 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the Union Chapel Cemetery in Ira or the Mingo Community Center and may be left at the church or at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home.
