PCM, CMB girls fall in regional soccer openers

NORWALK — The Warriors scored in the opening minute and Prairie City-Monroe’s girls’ soccer team never recovered during an 8-0 loss to Norwalk in a Class 2A Region 4 quarterfinal on Friday.

The match started Thursday but was suspended due to lightning after just 13 minutes. The matched resumed Friday with the Warriors leading 1-0.

Senior Miki Schmidt scored the Warriors’ first goal. She added another goal and an assist later in the match, while sophomore Megan Roberts also had two goals and an assist.

Junior Mallory Murphy scored one goal and had two assists, and juniors Emma Meyer and Lauren Gavin and sophomore Ally Gideon all scored a goal.

Norwalk (9-9) took 29 shots and 26 of them were on goal. Nine of those shots were taken in the first 13 minutes on Thursday.

PCM sophomore McKeely Tjaden had 18 saves in the loss. Norwalk’s Michaela Harvey stopped the only three shots the Mustangs had on goal.

The Mustangs ended their season at 7-13.

Norwalk plays in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at No. 10 Dallas Center-Grimes. The Fillies defeated Norwalk 3-0 earlier this season.

Des Moines Hoover 10, CMB 0

DES MOINES — The Raiders were shut out for the 12th time this season, and they ended their season at 0-14 after a quarterfinal loss in the 2A Region 3 tournament.

Mary Grace Leyda had six of the Huskies’ 10 goals, and she also had an assist in helping Hoover improve to 6-9 on the season.

Freshman Lydia Swanson had two goals and two assists, while freshman Victoria Htoo added two goals, and sophomore Stephanie Lopez dished out three assists. Sophomore Breanna Weiland also had two assists in the win.

Hoover plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Grinnell in Newton.
