Warhawks hand Hawks SICL loss

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks had just retaken the lead, 8-7, with a three-run bottom of the fifth in Friday’s South Iowa Cedar League contest at home against North Mahaska’s Warhawks.

The Warhawks staged a four-run sixth to grab an 11-8 lead. They were able to make it stand up, keeping their hosts scoreless the final two innings. It was the first loss in SICL play for the Hawks.

Lynnville-Sully answered North Mahaska’s three runs in the first inning by scoring four in its half of the frame. The Warhawks had single runs in the third and fourth innings. The Hawks tied the game at 5-5 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

It was a back-and-forth contest for the Hawks and Warhawks. North Mahaska tallied two runs in the fifth, but Lynnville-Sully plated three runs to hold its 8-7 lead.

Dylan Rozenboom hit a single and a double in the game and drove in a run for the Hawks. Caden Dunsbergen doubled. Kobe Fisk had two RBIs and one single. Elijah Collins singled and drove in a run. Ross Van Wyke singled.

Tyler Van Zante pitched five innings and Josh Dunsbergen worked the final two innings. The Hawk pitchers gave up 10 hits. Van Zante walked two, hit two batters and struck out five.

The Hawks (2-2) play three games in three nights this week. They host BGM at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Sully in SICL action then a non-conference game against Moravia at 6 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, Lynnville-Sully is at HLV in conference play.
