Newton's Reynolds sixth,Vanderlaan tied for 36th after 1st round of 3A boys' state golf

LIVERMORE — Newton High junior Austin Reynolds is in the top 10 on the first-round leaderboard at the 2016 Iowa Class 3A Boys’ State Golf Tournament. Junior Trey Vanderlaan is in the middle of the field at the end of the opening day.

On the Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore, Reynolds finished the first 18-holes of the 36-hole state tournament with a 74. He is four shots behind the first-day leader, Decorah senior Sam Sacquitne, who had a 70.

Reynolds opened with a three-over par 39 on the front nine with one birdie and four pars. He ended the day with back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to shoot one-under par, 35, on the back nine. He birdied No. 12 and had four pars.

Vanderlaan had a tough start to the day. He made the turn after the first nine with a 46 and had thee pars. Vanderlaan rebounded with a 38 on the back nine with seven pars.

Vanderlaan came in with an 84, tied with four others for 36th. There are 62 golfers in the 3A tournament.

Seniors Alec Fuhs of Webster City and Clayton Larsen of West Delaware are tied for second with 71s. Williamsburg junior Isaac Knock is fourth with a 72 and Gilbert senior Garret Jensen is fifth at 73.

Grinnell junior Brady Ellis and Mount Vernon senior Connor Herrmann are tied for seventh at 76, two shots behind Reynolds. There is a tie for ninth with four golfers shooting a 77.

The second round tees off at 8 a.m. Saturday.
