Newton girls close out regular season with LHC win

PELLA — Newton High’s Cardinals finished regular-season soccer action on a four-game win streak after downing host Pella Christian 3-0 Tuesday.

With the victory, the Class 2A ninth-ranked Cardinals notched a 4-2 mark in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Newton was third in the conference behind undefeated LHC champion Pella (6-0) and Dallas Center-Grimes (5-1). Pella edged DCG Tuesday, 3-2.

Newton got two goals from junior Ryanne Rausch Tuesday in the win over the Eagles. Junior Taylor Shipley added the other goal. No other information was available from the game by presstime.

The Cardinals (12-4) await their second-round Class 2A Region 5 opponent. Newton plays the winner of Thursday’s game between Carlisle and South Tama on May 31 at Newton.

On Monday, the Cardinals handed host Des Moines North a 10-0 setback after doing the same on Friday at home against Boone. In both games, the Cardinals were led by Rausch with five goals.

Rausch increased her goal season total to 32 over the past two games, moving into a tie for second on the Class 2A scoring list. She was the 2A scoring leader with 33 in 2015.

Against the Polar Bears, senior Taylor Moon and junior Taylor Shipley each found the net twice for Newton. Junior Morgan Allen scored once.

Senior Allison Ergenbright was credited with two assists on goals in the game. Senior Kari Adams, freshman Abbie Barr, junior Madison Mann and Rausch each had one assist.

Newton’s defense kept the Polar Bears at bay in the 10-goal margin rule shortened game. Newton’s sophomore goalkeeper Addy Blom did not have a save in the contest because North didn’t get a shot off at the goal.
