Doris Arlene Fisher

May 24, 2016

Doris A. Fisher, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Tuesday, May 24, 2016, after battling Alzheimer’s disease for two years. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with burial at Newton Union Cemetery.

Doris was born in Newton Dec. 10, 1928, to George and Mayme (Curtis) Douglas. She was a proud lifelong resident of Newton. Doris was a 1947 graduate of Newton High School and was homecoming queen her senior year. She was a homemaker until helping her husband Bob open a picture framing gallery “Fishers Gallery” on the town square in 1985. They retired in 1991, and spent their winters in Surprise, Ariz.

Doris was a founding and active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for more than 60 years. She was a member of the M.N.O. Club (Mother’s night out club), that started in 1953. Twelve ladies met once a month on Thursday nights, in each other’s homes. Those special friendships have endured a lifetime. Doris loved to dance, go on walks, watch sports, work in her yard and flower garden, and clean and decorate her homes. Doris and Bob traveled the country extensively in pursuit of their passion for collecting antiques and gifts for family. Her greatest joy was following whatever program or sporting event her four boys and her 13 grandchildren were involved in. She was their most enthusiastic and vocal cheerleader. She always told her grandchildren that all she ever wanted to do was be a wife and a homemaker, and she excelled in both.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert A. Fisher; four sons, Doug (Pam) of West Des Moines and their children, Joe (Kristine) and Jeff; Dan (Lynnette) of Urbandale and their children, Erin (Matt), Matt (Jamie), Sara (Grant) and Lauren (Chris); Dave (Melissa) of Newton and their children, Dallas, Darian, Brandon and Taylor; and Don (Julie) of Newton and their children, Cody (Ashley) Caitlin (Curtis) and Cal; and four great-grandchildren, Vera, Weston, Greta and Gwen.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be given to the church or the Newton Alumni Association.
