Newton girls power past Boone

Claiming their 10th win with a 10-0 soccer win at home, the Class 2A ninth-ranked Newton High Cardinal girls celebrated Senior Night. Newton decked visiting Boone at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

Two seniors scored goals for Newton and three seniors had assists for goals. Taylor Moon found the net three times and Victoria Jordan scored her ninth goal of the season. Hannah Rhoads was credited with two goal assists while Jordan and Allison Ergenbright each had one assist.

“It was a great evening for us to honor our six senior players and our senior manager Jaci Taddle,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said. “These girls have dedicated so much time, effort and heart to our program. They have anchored our team with their outstanding leadership this year.”

Moon, Jordan, Rhoads, Ergenbright are joined by seniors Alex Hutchinson and Kari Adams. The seniors and their parents were recognized at the game.

Newton led 8-0 at halftime. Junior Ryanne Rausch pushed her goal total to 25 for the season with five goals. Freshman Abbie Barr scored her first varsity goal.

Newton improved to 10-4 on the season. The Cardinals play a 4:30 p.m. game against Des Moines North Tuesday in Des Moines. The non-conference game was reschedule from April 28.

The Cardinals final regular-season game is Tuesday. They play at 5:30 p.m. against Pella Christian in Pella to wrap up Little Hawkeye Conference action.

They await their second-round Class 2A Region 5 opponent. Newton plays the winner of Thursday’s game between Carlisle and South Tama on May 31 at Newton.
