Cardinal boys’ soccer team beats Nevada

NEVADA — Ending the regular season with a win gives Newton High’s Cardinal boys momentum going into the Class 2A soccer playoffs.

The Cardinals shut out host Nevada, 2-0, Friday night. Newton’s goals came in the first half.

Josh Ventling scored with 31:19 left in the opening 40 minutes. Duncan Lee used a pass from Nick Rusk to net a goal at the 14:40 mark.

Griffin Engel was credited four saves in goal for Newton. The Cardinals put 12 shots on goal against Nevada.

“We came out early and established a good rhythm,” Newton head coach Sackda Viravong said. “In the second half, we were tired and couldn’t pass the ball effectively. The shots were not on frame, but we held on for the W. We’ll take the win and keep the momentum going into the playoffs.”

Newton finished the regular season at 11-5 and went 3-3 in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

The Cardinals open 2A Substate 7 action against Bondurant-Farrar at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Newton.
