Pollinators program at NPL, holiday hours announced

Holiday Weekend Hours

The Newton Public Library will be closed on May 27 for staff development and May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. The library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 28.

The Birds & the Bees:
Preserving Iowa's Pollinators

Natasha Bures from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be at the library at 6 p.m. Monday to talk about the different pollinators native to Central Iowa and what you can do to protect them. This program is free and open to the public.

Hometown Rewards
Energy Fair

Come join Hometown Rewards for another fun event from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Science Center of Iowa will be presenting “Simply Electrifying” amid various displays and booths. Come see the ideas that local elementary students have for saving energy, turn an old fridge into a book shelf, hop on the bounce house, earn tickets for prize drawings worth up to $500 and more. You won’t want to miss it.

Summer Reading Kick-Off

Bookworms of all ages are invited to attend the Summer Reading kick off event from 4 to 7 p.m. June 2. This is the first opportunity to pick up the Summer Reading materials for both children and adults. Families may also register for youth events at this time and there will be a free hotdog picnic for children attendees, while supplies last. Call 641-792-4108 with questions.

Downton Abbey

What was life really like below stairs at a place like Highclere Castle? Would a maid really help hide a body to preserve the reputation of her mistress? Could a chauffer ever marry an Earl’s daughter? Historian Kathy Wilson will answer these questions and discuss the truth vs. the television of Downton Abbey at 6 p.m. June 6. This program is free and open to the public.
