NCSD board to consider bids for Berg equipment

Agenda includes storm drain project at E.J.H. Beard building

Newton Community School District’s Board of Education has a full slate of items on the agenda for Monday’s regular meeting, but there are only a few that look to be time-intensive.

An amendment to the fiscal 2016 budget is one of the items on the agenda. The board submitted its fiscal 2017 budget to the state in April, so Monday’s adjustments will be to the budget for the year that will end June 30, 2016.

The board will consider a pair of physical-plant items at Berg Middle School. Consideration of bids for replacement of condensing units, evaporator coils a building automation control system are all on the list.

Renewal of a food purchasing agreement with Iowa Association for Educational Purchasing is on the agenda, as is a second reading of the new student transportation eligibility policy, numbered 711.1.

May is School Board Recognition Month and an acknowledgment will take place at Monday’s meeting.

Superintendent Bob Callaghan will cover a few items. He’ll present a timeline update on the recently named E.J.H. Beard Administration Building, which is nearing completion of its remodeling with parking-lot work set to begin. Move-in would follow soon thereafter.

There is also a storm drain project at the E. J. H. Beard building that requires board approval.

Callaghan will also present an update on union negotiations. A large fraction of the negotiation process isn’t discussed outside of closed sessions. However, at the May 9 board meeting, Callaghan went over the potential impact and cost to the district of a 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 percent total compensation increases for teachers.

This school year, more clubs and teams have taken fundraiser ideas to the board to ensure they have the backing of leadership. Monday, the Newton Pacesetters will propose a football T-Shirt fundraiser and the NHS football program will propose a card sale. The girls and boys swim teams have an advertising/poster proposed.

The board has a regular meeting scheduled for June 13 at Emerson Hough.
