Mustang boys cruise at 2A golf sectionals

CONRAD — Sophomore Dayton Boell came into Friday’s Class 2A sectional golf tournament with a season-best 18-hole score of 82.

After three straight bogeys to begin his round at the par 70 Oakwood Golf Course, it looked like it could be another one of those rounds in the mid-80s.

That all changed after knocking in six pars over his next seven holes and then recording two birdies on the back nine. Boell was four-over-par after nine holes, but improved that by two shots on the back nine during a career-best round of 76.

Boell earned medalist honors on the day, and the Prairie City-Monroe boys’ golf team cruised to the team title by 13 shots over Albia.

PCM finished with a 324, while Albia also advanced to the district tournament with a 337. Pella Christian, which had two golfers in the top four overall, was one shot back in third. The rest of the eight-team field included West Marshall (357), host BCLUW (360), Davis County (376), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (409) and East Marshall (428).

Boell’s 76 was three shots better than runner-up medalist Logan Faler of Davis County. Mitch Fopma of Pella Christian was third with an 80 and Graham Howerzl of Pella Christian shot an 81 to finish fourth.

PCM junior Ryan Hill tied West Marshall’s Hunter Pfantz for fifth. Both golfers shot an 82.

Mustang senior Reid Jenkins and freshman Andrew Van Ryswyk each shot an 83 to finish in a tie for seventh. Sophomores Noah Lanphier and Jackson Thomas both had non-counting scores of 91.

Boell had three pars, two birdies and four bogeys on his back nine. He birdied the par 5 No. 12 and the par 4 No. 14. Van Ryswyk birdied the par 4 No. 5.

The Mustangs advance to the district tournament for the second straight season. They’ll once again play at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike on Friday.
