Ruth Lenora Olson

May 12, 2016

Ruth Lenora Olson of Colfax, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Ramsey Village Health Center after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Ruth was born Feb. 4, 1928, to Obediah Hiram and Lottie Ruth (Tankersley) Jordan on the Jordan home place at Dunn, Texas. She and Harry Laverne Olson were married May 12, 1945, in Mentone, Texas. Following Harry’s military service they briefly resided in Pyote, Texas. In 1946, they moved to Iowa which was Harry’s birthplace. After temporary residing in a few locations, they moved to Colfax, and purchased their first and only home in 1950. Ruth remained there even after Harry’s passing in 2001, until about a year ago when her health issues prevented her from managing on her own.

Ruth worked more than 35 years at the Newton Foundry until its closure. Ruth was a strong woman who was not afraid to stand up for herself or others which she proved by being a union steward in the 1950s. She completed her working career at the Colfax-Mingo Community School District. She made many long-time friends during her years at both jobs. She loved being outdoors and spent countless hours gardening. During vacations the family enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. She also enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and friends, but particularly took pleasure in spending time with her family. Ruth was a fighter but also incredibly loving and generous to her family. While she could use her sharp tongue she was also well known for her quick wit and playful teasing that won her many admirers wherever she went.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16 at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

She is survived by her daughter Wanda Webb; son, Richard (Michele) Olson; grandson Jeffrey (Catherine) Webb; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; a sister; two half-sisters; and a half-brother.

Please do not send flowers. Memorial contributions may be given to the Colfax Fire Department or Mercy Hospice, 1055 Sixth Ave., Des Moines, IA 50314. Cards with your favorite stories or memories of Ruth would be treasured.
