It was a great tune-up for Friday’s Iowa Class 3A sectional tournament for Newton High’s Cardinal boys’ golf team. The Cardinals dominated Thursday Newton Cardinal Invitational with a winning team score of 341.

Winterset was 19 strokes behind in second place at 360. Bondurant-Farrar shot a 367 for third followed by Saydel with a 292 and Pella with a 409. Newton’s junior varsity was sixth with a 427.

The Cardinals played a solid 18-hole tournament despite the windy conditions on their home course — Westwood Golf Course. Newton hosts the 3A sectional at 10 a.m. Friday at Westwood.

All five teams are back Friday for the sectional.

“With Thursday’s win, the Cardinals are 23-0 in the month of May as they head into Friday’s sectional tournament,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “The wind effected the scores for all the golfers out there.”

Austin Reynolds paced the Cardinals, winning top medalist honors with a 79. Newton’s Trey Vanderlaan was second medalist with an 82 with Winterset’s Layne Kincade taking the third-place medal with an 83.

Bondurant-Farrar’s Jayden Brady earned the fourth-place medal at 88. Saydel’s Rece Martin and Newton’s Derek Damman each fired an 89 with Martin taking fifth-place medalist honors and Damman was awarded the sixth-place medal.

Paul Maharry and Shaiden Simmons each fired a 91 for Newton’s varsity. Payton Thomas finished with a 93.

“I realize it was not one of our best rounds. What I was most impressed with was how these kids kept on grinding even when they knew they weren’t scoring well,” Riley said.

“They have done this all year, and that has been a big reason for their success. I am anticipating they will step up and shoot a much better round in Friday’s sectional. It’s do or die from here on out and I know these young men are ready for the challenge.”

Newton’s JV was led by Sam Supino’s 102 followed by Colin McAnally at 105. Rhandyn Oldfield shot a 108 and Nate Vanzee had a 112. Parker Schuster finished at 123 and Devon Young had a 124.

Winning the Cardinal Invitational long drive contest was Bondurant-Farrar’s Dylon Storey with a drive of 295 yards. The tournament’s putting champion was Bondurant-Farrar’s Isaac Hanson.
