Thunder Nites back for fifth year

Kick-off event on Friday

Celebrating its fifth year, Thunder Nites Bike Night is back for the season. Beginning Friday, Thunder Nites will rock downtown Newton bringing more than 1,000 motorcycles along with thousands of people to enjoy quality entertainment.

Founded by Weekend Pit Stop, Thunder Nites is held the second weekend of the month starting in May and running through September. The nonprofit organization has become one of the biggest bike nights in state since beginning in 2011.

“We try to get bigger and better every year. We’re excited that it is going to be another great year and hope it brings lots and lots of people to Newton,” board president Bob O’Brien said.

Kicking off the 2016 season is Gimikk, a Des Moines based group that brings a high energy performance to accompany their musical skills. The group plays covers ranging from Van Halen to The Strokes along with originals from their two albums “Kindred Puppet” and “Travel My Direction.”

In June, Richard Arndt and The Brew will take the stage followed by Abby Normal in July. Standing Hampton will return to Thunder Nites in August and Mr. Fugly will round out the season in September.

“The September event we try to something very special for organ donor awareness,” O’Brien said.

This year’s Thunder Nites is sponsored in part by KGGO radio, who will be working on prizes and giveaways at each of the events this year. O’Brien said they are also excited to have a large number of vendors participating.
