Newton’s Lee is named to wrestling Academic All-State First Team

Newton High senior Duncan Lee has been named to the 2016 Academic All-State Team of Iowa high school wrestlers selected by The Predicament, an online source for Iowa wrestling in Cedar Rapids.

Lee is one of 15 wrestlers earning first-team honors. There were 14 other wrestlers named to the second team and 16 garnering honorable mention honors.

The teams are selected based on excellence in the classroom and on the wrestling mat. There were 158 wrestlers nominated for the Academic All-State Teams this year, with just 45 of them selected. The average GPA of the 45 student-athletes chosen was 3.96.

Lee placed sixth in the Class 3A 182-pound division at the state tournament in February. He went 47-6 in his senior season, which was only his third season of wrestling. Lee was a 3A district champion at 182 pounds.

Lee is going to Central College in Pella to study computer science and plans to wrestle for the Dutch.
