GRIMES — Wrapping up Little Hawkeye Conference dual golf play with a sweep of Norwalk and host Dallas Center-Grimes Monday on a soggy Beaver Creek Golf Course in Grimes was Newton High’s Cardinal girls.

“The course was wet, but playable,” Newton head coach Scott Enyart said. “It didn’t rain on us. We’re just glad to have gotten the meet in.”

Newton seniors Jessica Reynolds and Emily Fitzgerald led the Cardinals to the win. The Cardinals came in with a four-player team score of 197, beating Dallas Center-Grimes by 22 strokes. The Fillies had a 219 team total and Norwalk finished with a 243.

Reynolds carded a 43 for the nine-hole event to capture medalist honors. Fitzgerald was runner-up with a 49. Senior Jessie Smith shot a 52 and sophomore Taylor Dydell finished with a 53.

“Jessica had a great start with pars on No. 2 and No. 3 then birdied No. 5,” Enyart said. “Emily managed her game really well. She hit the ball consistently, and when she had a miss-hit, she corrected for it. Emily parred the No. 1 hole, which was her second hole of the meet.”

Enyart said Smith and Dydell played consistent golf. Dydell parred the first hole of the day, he said.

Sophomore Alyana Reynolds played and shot a 57. Also playing was junior Lizzy Coyle, who finished with a 61.

“I’m proud of the way our kids played today. This was a step in the right direction,” Enyart said. “The girls played with a lot of confidence.”

Newton, which is ranked eighth in Class 4A, finished 4-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Cardinals’ lone conference loss was to 4A fifth-ranked Pella.

The Cardinals play in the Southeast Polk Invitational at 9 a.m. Thursday at Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill.

Newton will host a Class 4A regional golf tournament May 23 at Westwood Golf Course. In the regional with Newton are Bondurant-Farrar, Ballard, Carlisle, Dallas Center-Grimes, Fairfield, Knoxville, Norwalk, Pella, Perry and Winterset.
