Newton boys’ golf team beats DCG

Newton High junior Austin Reynolds shot a 39 for medalist honors leading the Cardinal boys to a Little Hawkeye Conference golf dual win over visiting Dallas Center-Grimes.

The Cardinals combined for a four-man team score of 164 to the DCG Mustangs’ 200 in Thursday’s nine-hole meet at Westwood Golf Course.

Senior Derek Damman carded a 40 followed by junior Trey Vanderlaan’s 41 and senior Payton Thomas’ 44. Newton junior Paul Maharry finished with a 49 and sophomore Shaiden Simmons had a 50.

Newton’s varsity improved to 29-7 heading into the final week of the regular season. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in a LHC triangular with Pella and Pella Christian at Pella.

Newton hosts its Cardinal Invitational Thursday then is back on Westwood Golf Course Friday for a Class 3A sectional tournament.

The Newton junior varsity No. 2 squad played at home Thursday with a team score of 253. Parker Schuster had the low score with a 58 followed by Reese Rosenquist and Grant Fitzgerald each with a 64 and Joe Ross had a 67. Michael Hodnett shot a 71 and Jesse Sinclair had a 79.

Newton’s junior varsity No. 1 played at Oskaloosa Thursday in a junior varsity invitational at Oskaloosa Municipal Golf Course. The Cardinals were second out of five teams with a 200. Albia won with a 187.

Sam Supino and Nate Vanzee led the Cardinal JV, each shooting a 49. Colin McAnally had a 50 and Rhandyn Oldfield had a 52. Other NHS scores were: Evan Walker, 58, and Devon Young, 59.
