Newton Police Department

• Joseph J. Young, 31, of Newton, is charged with domestic abuse assault after authorities were called at 4:26 p.m. April 24 to the 100 block of East Seventh Street North. Officers spoke with the victim who said Young came at her and grabbed her by the throat. Young admitted to lunging at her because she was in his face. He had several scratches on his face and was taken to Skiff Medical Center for treatment. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Benjamin J. Grulke, 29, of Newton, is charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were called at 3:15 a.m. Monday to 1316 Crescent Drive. Officers were called about a stolen bike and spoke to witnesses who said they saw Grulke ride away with the bike. The owner said he did not give Grulke permission to take the bike. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Hannah M. Arends, 21, of Newton, is charged with forgery after authorities were called at noon April 20 to 121 W. Third St. N. Officers spoke with the victim who said her checkbook was missing along with a large amount of money from her account. She found two checks were written out to Arends and another suspect for $500 each. Arends admitted to taking the checks and having a friend sign them. She was cited and released to appear.
