GILBERT — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter freshman Will Clapper and junior Brady Kemp have gone back and forth against each other in the shot put this season.

Kemp came into Tuesday’s Heart of Iowa Conference co-ed meet with the best throw between the two of them, but Clapper won the last time out.

Clapper once again got the better of his teammate Tuesday, but the Raider duo went 1-2 in the shot put as CMB placed fifth in the HOIC team standings. Prairie City-Monroe came home with four bronze medals, and the Mustangs finished eighth.

North Polk won the meet by three points over Gilbert. The Comets finished with 116 points.

Gilbert had 113 in second, while Roland-Story (97), Nevada (90) and CMB (69) completed the top-five. The rest of the field included Greene County (61), South Hamilton (60), PCM (58) and Saydel (35).

Clapper put together his best two throws of the season when he eclipsed the 49-foot mark in the shot put. He won the event with a career-best toss of 49 feet, 9 1/4 inches. Kemp’s runner-up throw was 48-4.

“It feels amazing. I have never done that before,” Clapper said. “I was trying to get 50. I was mad that I was three inches off.”

Clapper said the winner between he and Kemp gets the title of “Sheriff” after every meet, while the other guy is the “deputy.”

“We love pushing each other. It’s great,” Clapper said.

The Raiders had two other runner-up finishes on the night.

Senior Brady Stover was a part of both of them. He was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.91 seconds. He started the shuttle hurdle relay and was joined by sophomore Joe Keeling, senior Lane Howes and junior Ben Gunderson. That group was second in 1 minute, 3.47 seconds.

Senior Hunter Gunderson came home with a bronze medal in the high jump. His best leap was 5-10.

PCM’s four third-place finishes all came in individual events.

Junior Noah Clark was third in the discus with a throw of 132-1, senior Austin Sneller took third in the 110 hurdles in 16.15 seconds and junior Chris Ellens was third in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

Ellens’ was clocked at 4:55.32 in the mile and 10:33.65 in the two mile.

Junior Luke Greiner placed fourth in the long jump. His best jump covered 19-9. He also started the fourth place 4x200 relay. That team also included sophomore Noah Henkenius, freshman Preston Van Wyk and senior Tyler Dredge. They finished in 1:38.05.
