NHS girls net win over Scarlets

Newton High’s Cardinal girls gave their senior tennis players a good send off in Tuesday’s home finale. The Cardinals notched a 9-2 dual win over visiting Des Moines East at Aurora Heights Park.

Seniors Kate Wyre, Sierra Griffith, Madison Humphrey, Elizabeth Myers and Stacie Sanger played their final home matches. Wyre, Griffith, Humphrey and Myers each netted a singles match victory on the night.

Sanger combined with sophomore Kinzie Loree at No. 5 doubles for Newton. Sanger and Loree lost to East’s Leslie Tiengkham and Anna Liu, 6-2, 6-0.

On the night, Newton won all the singles matches against the Scarlets. Wyre won the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-3, over Han Doan of East. Griffith claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Mailyn Huynh at No. 2 singles.

Humphrey won the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-3 over Rachel Reidburn. Myers pulled out a 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory over East’s Jodi Gosch at No. 6 singles.

In the No. 3 singles match, junior Katherine Thorpe defeated East’s Michaela Verwers, 6-4, 6-3. Newton sophomore Bethany Baumgartner downed Rosa Cruz, 6-2, 6-2.

Wyre and Griffith paired up for No. 1 doubles for Newton and won 6-1, 6-4 against Jasmine Khammany and Doan. At No. 2 doubles, Thorpe and junior Pressgrove gave Newton a 7-5, 6-0 win over Huynh and Verwers.

Humphrey and Myers played No. 3 doubles for Newton, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Reidburn and Gosch. At No. 4 doubles, East’s Rosa Cruz and Valerie Cruz got past Newton sophomore Natalie Camp and junior Leah Thomas, 7-6(6), 7-5.

Newton finishes the regular season at Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference tournament in Norwalk. Action begins at 10 a.m.
