Newton trap shooters have solid outing

MARSHALLTOWN — There is correlation between good weather and good scores for the members of the Newton Trap Team. On one of the few good late afternoons this spring, Newton competed in a trap meet at Marshalltown’s Marshall County Gun Club Monday.

“We finally had some good weather and the team members, for the most part, shot some of their best scores so far this season,” Newton coach Paul Klein said. “You can see by our results we had several shooters posting some really good scores.”

Newton competed against host South Hardin, the Marshall County Central Iowa Straight Shooters, Roland Story and Ballard.

The Cardinals’ team of Matt Bleakney, Logan Zaabel, Nathan Tremel, Bryce Romick and Brian Bleakney placed fourth out of 14 squads. The five shooters combined for a score of 198 — 17 clay pigeons out of first place.

Newton’s top individual shooter in the male senior division was Dawson Cobler, who hit 45 targets to tie for six place out of 66 shooters. Brian Bleakney recorded a 44 to tie for 10th place.

Allison Winchell was Newton’s high-score female shooter. Winchell hit 28 targets to place fifth out of 11 female competitors.

“Several of our varsity members have the ability to post some very good scores ,as long as they put their mind to it and focus one target at a time,” Klein said.

“I was really happy with our results tonight, and I hope they continue to shoot as well through the remainder of the season.”

Newton competes 9 a.m.Saturday in a trap shoot hosted by Ankeny at the Jasper County Gun Club in Newton.
