Freshmen win tennis matches for Newton

SAYDEL — Freshmen Collin Hemann and Brady Eberline not only played their first varsity singles matches for Newton High’s Cardinals Monday, but they won. It was the only victories for Newton in the non-conference dual against host Saydel.

“They moved up the ladder because a few members of the team missed the meet for a choir concert. They did a great job stepping up to the challenge,” Newton head coach John Bieber said of the two freshmen.

Eberline defeated Alex Stanton, 8-6, at No. 5 singles while Hemann had the same winning score at No. 6 singles over Saydel’s Alex Condon. The Eagles beat the Cardinals 7-2 overall in the dual.

Hemann and Eberline played a tough No. 3 doubles match against Stanton and Condon. Stanton and Condon came out on top, 9-8.

At No. 1 singles, junior Seamus Vandemore lost 8-0 to Saydel’s Jacob Philipsen. The No. 2 singles match went to Saydel’s Dalton Silver, 8-4, over Newton’s senior Michael McKinney.

In a tight No. 3 singles contest, the Eagles’ Andrew Smith defeated senior Nick Geerlings, 8-6. Saydel’s Peter Walkwitz netted an 8-3 decision over Newton senior Jake Bennett.

Philipson and Smith notched an 8-0 win over Newton’s Vandemore and McKinney in the No. 1 doubles match. Silver and Walkwitz won the No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, over Geerlings and Bennett.

Newton plays at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference dual at Des Moines East.
