Newton beats Perry

PERRY — Reaching the midway point of the soccer season, Newton High’s Cardinal girls rolled up their sixth win in seven games Friday.

The Class 2A 10th-ranked Cardinals recorded their fifth shutout of the season, beating host Perry’s Jayettes 7-0. They were led by junior forward Ryanne Rausch’s second hat-trick — three goals in a game — of the season.

“The team played very well. The girls’ passing was a key component to their offensive attack on Perry,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said.

Rausch is Newton’s leading scorer with 13 goals on the season. Junior Ashlee Freese was in goal for the Cardinals, making seven saves to raise her season total to 41.

The Cardinals got one goal each from seniors Victoria Jordan and Morgan Allen and juniors Taylor Shipley and Kaytlin Ahn.

Ahn, who was hurt midway through the second half Friday, has six goals of on the season and Jordan has five goals. Shipley has two goals for the season while Allen scored her first.

Newton (6-1) has outscored its opponents 31-4 in seven games. Newton had 33 shots on goal against Perry.

Shipley, Allen and seniors Alex Hutchinson and Hannah Rhoads each had an assist in the game.

“Our defense was once again solid with moving the ball out of the backfield and into a transitional offense,” Lamont said. “We need to continue to improve on our shooting accuracy, but the girls looked good and rested with the long break between games.”

Newton hosts Oskaloosa at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Little Hawkeye Conference play at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
