Cardinals net four victories against Trojans

TAMA — Wrapping up a long week of action, Newton High’s Cardinal boys dropped a 5-4 decision in a non-conference tennis dual to the host South Tama Trojans Friday.

Seniors Nick Geerlings and Jake Bennett netted their third singles victories of the season for Newton. Geerlings won at No. 5 singles over Tanner Probasco and Bennett beat Dylan Cronk at No. 6 by the identical scores of 10-3.

Newton junior Reid Miller pulled out a 10-8 win at No. 4 singles over Shaquille Carrillo. It was Millers’ second win of the season.

The other victory for the Cardinals came at No. 1 doubles as junior Seamus Vandemore and senior Jonah Keeton claimed a 10-7 win over Gabriel Garcia and Preston Chyma.

Garcia beat Vandemore 10-5 at No. 1 singles and Keeton lost 10-5 to South Tama’s William Henson at No. 2 singles. Henson and Thayne Lamb beat Newton’s senior Michael McKinney and Miller, 10-4, at No. 2 doubles.

Lamb defeated McKinney, 20-5, at No. 3 singles. At No. 3 doubles, South Tama’s Carrillo and Probasco notched a 10-7 win over Newton’s Geerlings and Bennett.

Newton (1-6) plays at 4:15 p.m. Monday at Saydel. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in a dual against host Des Moines East.
