Leo M. “Nip” Cobler, 72, of Altoona, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, April 27, 2016, after a long battle with cancer at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 2 at Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton. There will be a visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to Community Heights Alliance Church or to Unity Point Hospice may be left at the funeral home or the church the afternoon of the service.

Nip, the son of Earl C. and Floretta (Riedberger) Cobler, was born Feb. 5, 1944, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton High School in 1962. On Dec. 8, 1961, Nip was united in marriage to Barbara C. Couch in Newton. Nip worked at Cline Tool & Service Company in Newton, as an administrative vice president for 52 years, retiring in 2014. He was a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church. Nip enjoyed woodworking, remodeling, cars and travel, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and doting on his grandkids. He and Barb spent their winters in the warmth of Arizona.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Barbara of Altoona; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard “Tucker” (Roxanne) Cobler of Lenexa, Kan.; son-in-law, Dallas (Barb) Jackson of Urbandale; five grandchildren, Kenny (Maria) Jackson of Des Moines, Garrett Jackson and Cassandra Jackson of Urbandale, Jordan and Jacob Cobler of Lenexa, Kan.; five sisters, Marlene Waddle and Bonny (Fred) Simons of Newton, Vicky (Terry) Gaer of Aurora, Colo., Michele (Terry) Stone and Sandy (Bill) Johnson of Nixa, Mo.; his brother, Robert (Billie) Cobler of Jonesboro, Ark.; and many, many nieces and nephews. Nip was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, V.L. “Lori” Cobler Jackson; and his sister, Pat Hanna.
