Warriors take tennis dual against Cardinal boys

NORWALK — Newton High’s Cardinal boys went to third-set tiebreakers in two matches Tuesday against host Norwalk’s Warriors. The Warriors won out and recorded an 11-0 team victory in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis action.

“The whole team stepped up to the challenge and was able to push some matches to extended sets,” Newton coach John Bieber said. “Jonah Keeton lost a close third-set tiebreak to A.J. ClarkWilt at No. 2 singles. The doubles team of Nick Geerlings and Jake Bennett lost a third-set tiebreak to Andrew ClarkWilt and Noah Percy.”

Norwalk’s A.J. ClarkWilt got past Keeton, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 doubles match, Perry and Andrew ClarkWilt defeated Geerlings and Bennett 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

In the No. 1 singles match, Norwalk’s Jackson Wright defeated Newton’s Seamus Vandemore 6-3, 6-1. Wright and A.J. ClarkWilt beat Vandemore and Keeton at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.

Colton Chambers netted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Newton’s Michael McKinney at No. 3 singles and Andrew ClarkWilt beat Newton’s Reid Miller 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles, Geerlings lost 6-3, 6-1 to Norwalk’s Alex Fee while Bennett dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Norwalk’s Zach Cook at No. 6 singles.

Chambers and Fee combined to beat Newton’s McKinney and Miller at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 4 double match, Norwalk’s Tanner Downs and Noah Loffredo marked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Newton’s Collin Hemann and Brady Eberline.

Norwalk’s Collin Kilgore and Doug Stanley Jr. beat Newton’s Bryan McMahon and Grant Hamand, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 doubles match.

On Thursday, Newton plays at 4:15 p.m. in a dual at Boone.
