MONROE — The Prairie City-Monroe track and field team got to perform in front of its home fans for the first time this season Monday.

The Mustangs won two events, grabbed top-three medals in seven others and placed third in the Class A Division on Senior Night. PCM scored 128 points in third, trailing runner-up West Marshall by five. Class 3A South Tama County won the team title with 164.

“It was awesome to run at home tonight,” PCM coach Lindsey Cunningham said. “It was a nice night to send off our seniors at their last home meet.”

PCM’s 4x200 relay team won easily with a time of 1 minute, 50.86 seconds. That foursome included two seniors — Emily Hugen and Ashley Van Gorp — along with junior Jayci Vos and sophomore Ashley Miller.

The other win came from freshman Payton Schut. She won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 12:14.51.

Four silver medals were collected by the Mustangs.

Van Gorp grabbed the first one of the night when she leaped 15 feet, 1 inch in the long jump.

Junior Rachel Stafford ran to a runner-up finish in the 800 as she hit the finish line in 2:28.71.

Van Gorp and Stafford joined Vos and Schut to take second in the 4x400 relay. That group ended the night when they hit the finish line in 4:15.19.

Vos led the 400 hurdles for all but the final few meters but settled for second with a time of 1:09.16. She clipped the second to last hurdle, and that appeared to slow her down enough to allow South Tama’s Allison Yuska to rally.

Third-place finishes included Van Gorp in the 200 (28.13), Schut in the 1,500 (5:39.35) and senior Kiara Kappelman in the discus (94-8). Freshman Maddie Samson was fourth in the discus (92-7), freshman Megan Cowman was fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.9) and Vos took fourth in the 100 (13.76).

Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully finished six points apart in Class B race

Colfax-Mingo grabbed a big lead early, and managed to stay in the top two despite not having two of its big point scorers because of a PCM soccer match.

Junior Dakota Hostetter, who also plays for the Mustang soccer team, doubled up for the first time this season.

She gave the Tigerhawks an early boost by helping them win the 4x800 and distance medley relays before heading to Knoxville for soccer.

Before that, junior Amy Russell and sophomore Rhiannon Haley went 1-2 in the shot put, sophomore Ries Wilson won the high jump and junior Alivia Haley grabbed the gold in the discus as the Tigerhawks placed second overall in the Class B team race.

In her first meet of the season, junior Aranda Woods gave the Tigerhawks eight points with a runner-up finish in the long jump.

Montezuma’s dominance in the sprint events helped the Bravettes win the team title with 156 points. Katie Maschmann won both the 100 and 200, and Montezuma also grabbed gold medals in the 400, 800, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

Colfax-Mingo was next with 136 points, followed by Lynnville-Sully in third with 130. Sigourney had 89.5 points, while BGM (84), North Mahaska (73) and Twin Cedars (32.5) rounded out the seven-team field.

The Hawks got a win from senior Marissa Vos in the 3,000, and the shuttle hurdle team also grabbed the gold. However, L-S stayed within striking distance of a team title because it had seven runners-ups, went 1-2 in the 3,000 and 2-3 in the 400.

“The girls are competing very well right now,” Lynnville-Sully Darin Arkema said. “After winning two meets last week, I was curious to see how we would come out and start this week, especially since after not having practice between Friday’s meet and tonight.”

Wilson won the high jump with a season-best jump of 4-10, Alivia Haley grabbed the discus crown with a toss of 87-2 and Russell heaved the shot put 32-6 1/2 to win. Rhiannon Haley was second in the shot put and third in the discus with throws of 31-5 and 85-2, respectively.

Woods’ runner-up finish in the long jump covered 13-5 1/2.

The Tigerhawks won the 4x800 relay and the distance medley.

Hostetter rallied her team with a strong third leg in the 4x800, and Danielle Decker finished off the win on the anchor leg. The team also included Courtney Burdess and Colleen Craig, and they finished in 11:18.08.

The distance medley relay won easily with a time of 4:53.58. Russell, Woods, Katerina Mentielova and Hostetter made up that foursome.

The Tigerhawks’ 4x400 relay was the runner-up behind Montezuma. The team of Megan Earles, Wilson, Burdess and Mentielova finished in 4:48.01.

Freshman Ilia Hostetter was third in the 1,500. She recorded a time of 6:04.97.

Marissa Vos’ winning time in the 3,000 was 12:39.44. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Shelby Foster, Mariah Vos, Hailey Scandridge and Camryn Russell crossed the finish line in 1:15.53.

Individual silver medals were collected by Scandridge in the 400 (1:06.92) and Makayla Rozendaal in the 3,000 (13:18.12). Mariah Vos was third in the 400 and Jataya Meyer collected bronze medals in both the 100 and 200.

The 4x100 and 4x200 were both second to Montezuma. The 4x800 and distance medley relays were both second to Colfax-Mingo.

“I changed some relay orders and moved some people around in different events to keep people sharp, get some people more opportunities and see some different things,” Arkema said. “I knew this could make winning the meet as a team a little more difficult, but we want the focus to continue to be getting better as we get closer to our conference and state qualifying meets.”

The 4x100 team of Kasiah Ehresman, Russell, Makenzy Rozendaal and Brenna Lanser finished in 53.66. The 4x200 foursome of Ehresman, Makenzy Rozendaal, Lanser and Meyer hit the finish line in 1:51.79.

The 4x800 relay included Haley Breeden, Jule Ranch-Holm, Emily Van Gorp and Shaleah Van Wyk, and they finished in 11:49.22. The distance medley foursome was Skyler Young, Shiloh Cunningham, Alexis Hardenbrook and Haley James. That group finished in 5:26.11.
