Lynnville-Sully boys win Rocket Relays Class B championship

EDDYVILLE — Capturing their second straight track meet championship, Lynnville-Sully’s boys won nine events in Tuesday’s Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rocket Relays’ Class B competition.

The Hawks amassed 180 points to win the Class B division, which had seven other teams competing.

Corey McCoy was a double-gold medal winner in individual races for Lynnville-Sully and ran on a winning relay team. McCoy posted a winning time of 54.43 seconds in the 400-meter dash with teammate Max Knapp in fourth at 56.80.

McCoy won the 800 meter reach in 2 minutes, 12.33 seconds, and teammate Isaac Collins ran sixth in 2:28.70. McCoy combined with Cody Gibbs, Carson Dunsbergen and Canyon Kuhlmann to win the 4x800 relay in 9:08.85.

Kuhlmann claimed the gold in the 1,600 meters in 5:05.11. Kuhlmann picked up another gold medal anchoring the Hawks’ 4x400 relay. He combined with Carson Dunsbergen, Tyson Vander Linden and Gage Vander Leest for a time of 3:47.70.

Vander Linden turned in a first-place time of 1:01.72 in the 400 hurdles and Carson Dunsbergen was second in 1:03.33. Vander Leest and Ryan Hofer finished second and third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.01 seconds and 18.07, respectively.

In the shuttle hurdle relay race, the Hawk foursome of Vander Leest, Caden Dunsbergen, Noah Engle and Hofer won in 1:08.17. Another gold medal winning relay was Lynnville-Sully’s 1,600-meter distance medley team of Knapp, Colten Arment, Rylan James and Gibbs in 4:09.97.

Engle collected a gold medal in the discus with a throw of 133 feet, 6 inches with teammate Sage Ehresman in second place at 129-8. Ehresman placed second in the shot put with a toss of 47-4, and James took third at 40-11 1/2.

Ehresman was nipped at the finish line in the 100-meter dash by Montezuma’s Jordan Bender — 11.72 to 11.76. Nate Stock placed fifth in the 200 meters in 24.99 seconds and Ross Van Wyk was sixth at 25.03.

The Hawks’ 4x100 team of Stock, Engle, Caden Dunsbergen and Ehresman and the Montezuma foursome each posted a time of 45.70 seconds. Montezuma was awarded the gold medal.

In the 4x200 relay race, Lynnville-Sully’s team of Stock, Vander Linden, Engle and Van Wyk was third in 1:38.49.

Carson Dunsbergen cleared the bar at 5-6 for second in the high jump, and Cayden Johnson was third at 5-0. Johnson placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 16-4.

The Hawk boys compete at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the PCM Invitational in Monroe.
