High-speed motorcycle chase leads to arrest

An 18-year-old Kellogg man was arrested and charged with 10 misdemeanors and eluding after leading police on a short chase on a motorcycle Saturday evening in Newton.

Newton Police say Kolton B. Hansen was spotted by an officer at about 8:30 p.m. accelerating rapidly through an intersection along the courthouse square. The officer tried to pull over the motorcycle Hansen was riding on North Second Avenue, but Hansen accelerated and headed east along North Third Avenue at a very high rate of speed, according to the police report

Hansen ran two stop signs before he crashed the motorcycle near the intersection of North Third Avenue and East 13th Street North. He then eluded police on foot for a short time going between houses for a couple of blocks, before he was apprehended.

He was taken to Jasper County Jail, where he bonded out at about midnight. His cash-or-surety bond was $4,700.

Hansen is charged with eluding, an aggravated misdemeanor, along with interference with police acts, a serious misdemeanor. He is also charged with eight other minor traffic or registration violations, including driving while his license is suspended.

Newton Police Lt. Bill Henninger said two motorcycles were initially observed near the courthouse square, but due to the high rate of speed, only one was pursued. No other information is available on the second motorcycle.
